Shopping for home projectors

SHARE

Home projectors create a pleasant movie experience. When shopping for one, you will realize that the prices vary significantly for different projectors. Such differences are influenced by certain factors. If you are looking forward to getting one, consider the following aspects to help you in your selection.

Lumens

Brightness for projectors is measured in lumens. It ranges from 800 to 4000+ lumens. The price of the projector increases with an increase in lumens. Projectors with lumens under 1000 are usually the least expensive. They have low light output and are thus suited for dark rooms. Those above 3000 lumens are the most expensive. They are very bright and can be used in rooms with some light.

Type of projector

There are two types of projectors, Digital Light Processing (DLP) and Liquid Crystal Display (LCD). DLP produces a smooth image, is highly accurate with no shadows and has a high contrast ratio. LCD is very compact, has high brightness capabilities and has good color saturation. Because LCD uses a more advanced technology, it tends to be more expensive than DLP.

Resolution

This is determined by the pixels projected. High resolution translated to clear and sharp images. The price of the projector increases with increase in resolution.

Brightness

When buying a projector, you need to look at both the color and white brightness. The light needs to be bright enough but not too bright that it affects the human eye. The choice of lumens should be based on the lighting of the room. For home use, you will need to buy a projector with a minimum of 1500 lumens. Commercial users may require 2500 or more.

Thrown ratio

The thrown ratio is determined by the distance from the projector to the screen and how wide the screen is. This is among the first considerations when choosing a projector.

Convenience features

There are some features that you can look for if you don’t want to do a lot of work. One is the HDMI. This allows for easy and instant digital connection to your high-definition devices. Another one is the wireless capability which allows you to project without using a cable. If you don’t want a lot of wires running through your home, you need to look out for this feature. The instant on and off feature will save you time as there will be no waiting for the projector to cool down or warm up.
